About this event
This trek in southern Oregon will include visits to several lakes in the Sky Lakes Wilderness area. The trip will start at the Cold Springs trailhead and explore three different lake basins using a combination of backcountry base camps and day hikes. We will also visit the Judge Waldo Tree SE of Island Lake, which was inscribed by J.B. Waldo in 1888. The tree was inscribed during a trip taken by Judge Waldo and four others by horseback from Mt. Jefferson to Mt. Shasta along the Cascade Crest and is believed to be the last known remnant of that trip. J.B. Waldo grew up near Salem, was an Oregon Supreme Court judge, and an early voice for the conservation of the Cascade Forest. Waldo Hills and Waldo Lake are named after him.
