PCT section backpack: Hyatt Lake Resort to Fish Lake

About this event

This section backpack will cover 32 miles of the PCT. This part of the trail is characterized by a transition from high-elevation forests and meadows into a more rugged, volcanic landscape. Much of the trail meanders through dense coniferous forests of Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and white fir. However, towards the northern end of the section (near Fish Lake), the terrain changes dramatically. There we will hike through lava rock formations and ancient lava flows, particularly around the base of Brown Mountain. While the trail itself is often smoothed over with pulverized rock, the surrounding landscape is jagged and "otherworldly."

Depending on the weather and trail conditions, the backpack may be rescheduled to June 2-9. This section is generally considered one of the easier, more level stretches of the PCT in Oregon.  I'm trying to limit the mileage to 6 miles a day, but there may be a 10 mile day to avoid dry camping. On April 19th we'll drive 4 hours from Albany to Hyatt Reservoir where we will stay the night prior to backpacking.
