On a glorious sunny day three of us walked from the Champoeg State Park Visitors Center to the historic Butteville Store and back, about 7 miles RT. Roz was in the know and suggested we have affogatos on the deck of the store. Great plan, Roz! There is nothing wrong with ice cream before lunch. A little history: The very first Chemeketan hike was 97 years ago and was from Butteville to Champoeg. Twenty-nine Chemeketans took the Oregon Electric Railway from Salem to Butteville to begin the hike along an "old Indian trail”, now the bike path we followed. The Railway operated from 1908 to 1933, and there were dozens and dozens of stops. If only we had that now.
