At this event, you can hear from the “experts” who will speak about various Chemeketans activities: the Outing, hiking, the Climbing arm, and other aspects of the club. You‘ll have an opportunity to ask any questions, too.

In this class we will be at Smith Rock state park. Saturday morning we will head out bright and early to start setting anchors at the top of student wall. We will be in small supervised groups where we will be building the anchors we learned in the classroom session. After lunch we will then rappel down on the anchors we set and spend the rest of the afternoon climbing student Wall on the gear you placed. On Sunday we will break into small groups, usually two students and two teachers. We will go to some easy climbs and do some mock-leading.

No waterfalls, but a beautiful, uncrowded hike through the forest.
Come hike the highest peak in the Coast Range!
This trail is approximately 8.3 miles and wanders through forest, up and down hills, and around ponds and marshes.
Thursday will begin at the Pole Creek trailhead. We’ll hike on South past North Sister and across Soap Creek on a modified log bridge witnessing the destruction from the 2012 Pole Creek forest fire. We’ll continue for less than another mile where we will reenter the original forest that survived the fire. Somewhere at this point we will encounter snow on the trail. This is generally where I will change out of trail running shoes and into my mountaineering boots. Eventually, we’ll find the “Climber’s Trail” junction where we’ll then head due west and set our basecamp near timberline for the evening. Snow conditions permitting, we will have running water within a 10-minute walk from our camp. We will hit the sleeping bags early Saturday night and wake at 4:00 am on Friday morning. By no later than 5:00 am, we’ll begin our snow-covered ascent to the Hayden Glacier where we will rope up as a team and gain the Col between Middle Sister to the South and Prouty Point to the North. I plan on roping up on the Hayden glacier whether crevasses are open or not to provide rope-team travel practice. Once at the Col, we’ll take a short break while a fixed-line is set (if necessary) on the steepest snow section on Middle Sister’s North shoulder. After ascending up the North shoulder, we’ll cruise to the summit as a team to hopefully enjoy the incredible views! Weather and time permitting, we’ll hang out, if not we’ll quickly bail back to the Col. Once back to camp, we’ll briskly eat lunch while breaking down our camp and return to the Pole Creek trailhead.

We will hike around Clear Lake, through forest and over lava flows. The trail crosses a bridge over the headwaters of the McKenzie River. The blue and turquoise colors of the lake are stunning. The red vine maple and other fall colors add to the beauty of this lake. After having lunch lakeside, we will complete the loop, then drive a short distance to Sahalie Falls and do the short hike down to the falls. Covid vaccinations are required. Bring a face mask for carpooling if the driver requests that.
Note: Clear Lake is at the edge of a closed area due to the Lookout fire. If it is still smokey in that area, or Clear Lake is not accessible, we will do a substitute hike.
