About this event
This backpack is near Mt. Lassen, and will follow Hat Creek rim from Old Station to Burney Falls state park. This is a PCT section about 40 miles long. I have hiked the full length of the PCT and this is one of my favorite stretches. I have gone back 3 times to do it again and enjoyed it each time. This is an especially good time, as the early flowers are on, and virtually no one else is there this early in the season. This trip has lots of wonderful views, but is mostly level with about a 600 foot elevation gain to start and then very minor ups and downs. This backpack takes 6 days total, with with 4 days on the trail and 2 days of travel.
I have engaged the Burney Mountain Guest Ranch to help support this backpack. The guest ranch is just off the PCT about a mile north from
the fish hatchery at Crystal Lake/fish hatchery. We will end the backpack at the guest ranch which will shorten the trip about 8 miles so this will result in a new total length of about 32 miles.
So the revised trip will be:
-- Drive from Salem to the guest ranch on May 27th leaving Salem at 7am. Your car can be left at my house. We will stay at the guest ranch on May 27th .
-- The guest will arrange to take us to the trail head at Old Station on the morning of May 28th . A distance of about 20 miles. We will begin the backpack then,
-- We will end the backpack at the guest ranch on May 31st .
-- Return to Salem on June 1st
Burney Mountain Guest Ranch Information
The guest ranch has lodge, a number of different lodging options including tent camping, a swimming pool, small resupply store food service with supper being a buffet. Breakfast is also served. A laundry is also available. There are also other services depending on your activities.
I have tentatively reserved a 6 bed bunk house with an attached bath for both nights stay. The cost is $50 per person per night. The food service is a separate cost. So if you would like to camp out with your tent and bring your own food please let me know as soon as possible.
Staying at the guest ranch really helps at the end of the trip as we do not need to arrange (I have hitch hiked a couple of times) for the return travel to Old Station for our vehicle.
The guest ranch encourages PCT thru hikers to stop at the ranch and enjoy their amenities. They are very hiker friendly. The place was closed during my previous three trips due to COVID which resulted in the closing of the resort. The guest ranch is now reopened under new ownership.
