DESCRIPTION
This will be a very low-key, fun event. This is a chance to practice building and sleeping in snow caves close to our cars (just in case it all goes terribly wrong!). Sort of a car-camp-in-the-snow thing. You can test your gear and winter camping methods in a low-stress environment. Saturday we'll dig snow caves, test our snow camping skills, practice Z-pulley building if we have time and  explore the area on your own. No big summits or hard work involved other than digging a snow cave. True mountaineers will plan to cook out in the snow for a real test while slackers will wimp out and eat at the snack bar in the Lodge. Sunday we can do a short climb up the east face Hayrick Butte to practice rope travel, placing pickets and clipping through and snow anchor building. You'll get the mental challenge of placing and clipping through pickets and building snow anchors on a 'mock' climb on Sunday. Snowshoes (rather than X-C skies) will be best for most participants. You'll definately need one or the other for traveling on top of the snow.

MEETING LOCATION AND DRIVING DIRECTIONS

We will meet at SKM in Salem at 8am Saturday morning and drive to the snow camp area to be determined based on weather and snow conditions. Santiam Pass near the Hoodoo Ski Area is our first choice but we may move to Mt Hood,  near Timberline Lodge, if there isn't enough snow.

REFERENCE/MAPS
